Hi there,
after I had a glance at http://www.newcomer.hu,/ I almost got the impression that there are only a hand full of people who actually play this game. These people, on the other hand, have progressed rather far in the game ... so it seems, judging from the topics that are discussed: For example: "Are 6 people in the party too many?"
But I just don't believe that there is nobody else out there! Where are all the Newcomer newcomers who still don't know where to find that "Mnogo" that everyone seems to have in their parties?
This is how far I got up to now:
Mnogo joined me yesterday, so I am not a Newcomer newcomer according to the above definition.
I have looked around in the Rockers' Quarter, the Graveyard, the Agro Section, the Monks' Park, and the Cellar, and solved a couple of small things in these areas. It seems that a whole lot remains to be done before I can enter any of the other areas. On the whole bleeding map (outside the areas I mentioned), I still cannot so anything that makes sense. Either I don't have a required item, password, or skill, or my combat strength is too low (only a Walther & Mnogo in the party).
Obviously, I also triggered a few events (I have seen that Agro adder thing in three versions ... continued playing with the most gory version). But where have those people gone that just ran away (that adder guy and another one in Rocker)? It's puzzling...
Maybe someone has got some hints on the following details?
- That "mutual flying" thing... I have got a few green objects that should be converted into something that is needed for the trip. But how? or who will help me with that?
- On another location, I have already had a strange optical experience and I went unconscious... But no mutual flying. Is it still worth it?
- An NPC gave me a hint that a specific "evil must be done" or something like that, although I still don't know what that means. Is it true that I need an enourmous gambling skill for the job?
- There are dozens of doors left that remain closed... Is it any use to train Neil's picklock skill to 5 or higher? (Considering that I am still quite early in the game and also need better combat power...)
- There are also so many doors that require passwords that I won't even ask how to get them all. Just one: Can anyone give me a little clue about how the %$/(&% I can get into that Monk Kindergarten??!
- That blind man... doesn't seem to spit out anything useful. Obviously, I need an explosives specialist for his home first so that I get some new keywords I can ask him... Or am I *completely* wrong?
- How can I get a vaccine for that City disease?! Both doctors don't seem willing to inoculate me...
- Where do I find more party members? Nobody seems interested in joining...
But PLEASE: Don't tell me any actual solutions, passwords, or names of items... Just some little hints would be great!

Maybe only the hardcore players post. I've finished the game but haven't completed it. Sounds like you've found things I missed.
There are many places in Newcomer you can get to long before you can get past them. The most frustrating point (before the endgame) is when you leave the TOWN for the first time and have no idea what to do next. Neither doctor in the TOWN has the vaccine. You have to get it in the CAMP (area A), which requires a password from the Colonel's quarter or an item from Rocker. To get either, you need to win a fight you're not ready for. Nothing else is worth worrying about yet. You'll need items or skills from the CITY to do anything useful in any of the wilderness areas.
Someone in the Rock Saloon will tell you what you need to get high. You can't reach him yet.
It is useful to train Picklock to high levels, but it costs a lot of EXP. Save your game, train picklock, and explore. I used save-states so I could try things like this without regretting them later.
Talk to someone near the kindergarten for the password. The trick is that you need to say you want to see the CHILDREN, then give the password. One of the children will give you a clue that helps you find another ally (who comes with Picklock 5).
The blind man will give you an item if you ask him about a character you haven't met yet.
I don't remember the NPC who says "evil must be done". Send me the details privately and I can try to work it out.
Hope I didn't spoil anything...
John

Exactly. I have visited every single place on the map, but on each of the places, obstacles await that I cannot overcome. I even explored the forest and obviously I am already quite near to the interesting part that must be hidden there. Unfortunately, you can avoid *many*, but *not all* fights & deathtraps in that forest. Those beasts and marauders are just too strong, I cannot even win against the wolves...grrr...

The point is: I already got high, but not smoking! One NPC dialogue has changed as a consequence. Now I am wondering if it is still worth pursuing that mutual flying thing.
It is quite obvious that I want to see the CHILDREN, and it seems that getting that password should be simple. But I just can't find it... Maybe I have just spoiled it and the person who has it won't tell me... I'll go on investigating that... Would be really nice to have a good lock-picker in the team...
That "evil" thing: I don't remember the exact wording. It all started with the rapist in the Colonels' Quarter's pub, and then there were two more steps to it.
If you decide to play the game once again: Under certain (illogical) conditions, you will meet (or NOT meet) someone who really needs help in the Agro section. Basically, don't explore Agro too early (go there just for working) until you are a bit further in the game. Then, find out how to help that man. That scene RULES! I still don't have any clue which events I have triggered with that, though. Seems that this part is not that crucial to complete the game... It just looks to complicated for me as that anyone could expect players to figure that out...
I think this little conversation is quite fruitful if we stay at this abstract level...
Cheers!

Hmmm, I finally solved that kindergarten thing. It was very easy after all.
BUT... maybe it wasn't really such a good idea to get Mnogo first. Obviously, the fact that he joined me had a whole bunch of influences on the story, and the fact that I am not alone had at least one additional impact... In their combination, all of those consequences have led to a rather awkward situation. Not even the 8500 bucks I have earned after some (real-life) hours in the Argo section seem to help me out. Now, there seem to be 2 possibilities:
1. I am totally fucked and must start over from scratch.
2. I am just discovering a completely new storyline.
I am afraid the former is true, though...

Don't be afraid to start over or to go back to an earlier save. But when you get into a position you don't think you can get out of, try everything and take notes. Start killing people. If there's a fight you can't quite win, train your combat skills. Normally killing random people and wasting EXP will spoil your game, but if it's already spoiled, go for it.
Mnogo is helpful when you're just starting out. There are a few places where he gives you clues if you have him, and he's a decent fighter until you learn where the best allies are. The game I escaped I didn't use him, but you probably want him for now.

You said:

That's absolutely true for a lot of tasks in Newcomer. They seem extra hard and when you solve it, they prove to be plain simple.
Naturally, there are more difficult tasks too, but I tried to put as many hints in as possible. You should ask people, look around and search where it is applicable.
And of course, here I am, you can ask me as well. Good gaming, guys!

OMG IM IN TEH HOUSE!
First off, just because people dislike you for having Mnogo doesn't mean your screwed. In fact there's even a way later on to temporarily change how a party member looks.
Newcomer is all about these silly obstacles that pop up and that "WHAT MORE DO I HAVE TO DO?!" feeling.

You have the green stuff? Well there is someone who can make it into hashish. Im sure you can reach this person at your point of progress or slightly later. In addition, you can try something else besides hashish.

I believe I know what your talking about. Hehe yep it's worth it, no probs free EXP etc. However it may trigger some events, but I say it's fine. No it's not mutual flying so find those drugs!

Wow, I never found this hint.

Well sometimes you can blow a door open with explosives. Later on you get alot of explosives, but there's always pros and cons to everything. I'd think it would be good to raise the picklock skill, but you may want to see just how far you can go before raising it.

The blind man will give information about a certain "group" of people. Just ask him some names and you'll figure it out.

You mentioned you had a Walther? Hmmm never found him. The key to getting more party members is Newcomer progress. However you must be careful. Combat experince is evenly divied up between all members. In addition, sometimes an NPC won't like a party member you have. The biggest problem is that you can't just go abusing them. Sometimes they won't want to leave(although they will eventually at the right time when you ask), and if they do leave Neil loses some EXP. If they die and you dismiss them, Neil loses ALOT more EXP. Thus party members are alot of hassle. Still, you need them. I feel six is too many. The laws of math say EXP is divided: 1 member=100% 2 members=50% 3 members=33.33% 4 members=25% 5 members=20% 6 members=16.66%
IMO you'll want more then 2 members. 3-4 is a good number. Also remember that EXP is only split in combat. However when you dismiss a party member, he will NEVER rejoin you, let alone be seen again! So the moral of the story is to be cautious about who joins your posse.

I actually changed his looks permanently
. I know that there is this temporal possibility, I just didn't see any way to get that object you need, given the situation I'm in. Maybe I was wrong, but hey: Why should I do things the simple way when there is also a complicated one

Yep, one of my best pals is a gun named Walther

Changed Mnogo's look permanently? Not bad, never had this idea... have to try it once...

Hi Thunder
I will get an Amiga 2000/040 soon, so revision 3 is not a dream anymore :)
